As highlighted by ScienceDirect in their article “Laser Cutting,” achieving high-quality, square-edge cuts in metal fabrication depends heavily on precise laser cutting parameters. The article explores the relationships between material thickness, cutting techniques, and resulting surface conditions.
When cutting thin metals of 1 mm or less, it is possible to achieve near-perfect square edges with optimized laser settings. However, as metal thickness increases, a slight taper naturally develops, approximately 1/1000 of the sheet thickness up to 6 mm. Surface roughness also increases with thicker metals, with striations from the melting process becoming more pronounced.
